The ilish (Tenualosa ilisha), also known as the hilsa, is an anadromous fish—meaning it spends a majority of its adult life in marine waters before migrating upstream into freshwater rivers to spawn.
-
Marine and Coastal Habitat: Ilish inhabit the pelagic-neritic regions of tropical seas, brackish waters, and coastal areas, often found down to depths of approximately 200 meters. Their marine distribution spans the North Indian Ocean, notably the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, the Persian Gulf, and surrounding estuarine networks.
-
Migration and Life Cycle: While mature ilish live and feed extensively in the marine environment, they undertake massive seasonal migrations upstream into major deltaic rivers and estuaries (such as the Padma, Meghna, and Hooghly rivers) to breed. After hatching, the juveniles (known locally as jatka) grow in river channels before descending back into the sea to mature.
-
Nutritional and Economic Value: Sea- and delta-caught ilish are widely celebrated for being an oily fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids. This high fat content gives the fish its distinct, rich flavor and tender texture, making it a culturally and commercially prized delicacy across South Asia.
