Singi / Catfish 500gm

Singi Mach (also spelled Shing or Singhi, scientifically Heteropneustes fossilis), known in English as the Asian Stinging Catfish, is a freshwater live-fish (jiol mach) widely consumed in Bengal, Assam, and Odisha.

• Physical Traits: It is a long, slender, scaleless catfish with sharp pectoral spines that can deliver a painful sting if mishandled while alive.

• Nutritional & Health Value: Highly prized for its convalescent and therapeutic qualities. It is rich in lean protein, iron, and essential minerals, low in fat, and exceptionally easy to digest. In Bengali households, it is traditionally served to recover strength during illness, post-surgery, or to combat anemia.

• Bones & Texture: It has tender, light flesh with a single main central backbone and virtually no fine pin-bones, making it simple to eat.

• Cooking: Most commonly prepared as Singi Macher Patla Jhol—a light, soothing broth made with cumin paste, ginger, green chilies, and vegetables like raw papaya, raw banana, and potatoes.
