Amudi Mach (আমুদি / আমোদী মাছ), known in English as the Goldspotted Grenadier Anchovy or Mandeli (Coilia dussumieri), is a small, coastal marine and estuarine fish widely relished across Bengal, Odisha, and Western India.
-
Appearance & Traits: It has an elongated, tapering ribbon-like body with silvery-golden scales, large eyes, and fine gold/yellow spots along its belly. The body tapers dramatically into a very fine, pointed tail.
-
Habitat: Marine and brackish water; caught along the Bay of Bengal coastline, tidal estuaries, and mangrove deltas.
-
Texture & Bones: The flesh is tender, soft, and slightly sweet. It has very delicate, soft bones that soften further when fried or cooked, making it convenient to eat whole without intricate deboning.
-
Culinary Favorites:
-
Amudi Mach Bhaja: Deep-fried or shallow-fried until crisp with turmeric, salt, and a touch of rice flour or semolina, served with hot dal and rice or as an evening snack.
-
Amudi Macher Chorchori: A dry, homestyle stir-fry cooked with thinly sliced potatoes, eggplants, onions, and mustard oil.
-
Tel Jhal: Cooked in a spicy mustard oil gravy tempered with nigella seeds (kalo jeere) and finished with freshly ground mustard paste and green chilies.
