Magur Mach (500 grams)

Magur Mach (scientifically Clarias batrachus), known in English as the Walking Catfish, is an indigenous freshwater live-fish (jiol mach) highly valued in Bengali and Eastern Indian cuisine.

• Appearance & Traits: It is a scaleless, dark brownish-black catfish with long barbels (whiskers) and an accessory breathing organ that allows it to survive out of water for extended periods.

• Health & Nutrition: Celebrated alongside Singi for its therapeutic benefits. It is rich in highly absorbable iron, high-quality lean protein, and calcium, while being low in fat and gentle on the stomach. It is traditionally prescribed for recovering patients, new mothers, and anyone suffering from anemia or weakness.

• Texture & Bones: Tender, dense, and slightly sweet flesh with only a central backbone and no sharp intramuscular pin-bones.

• Culinary Use: Most famously prepared as Magur Macher Jhol—a light, nourishing stew made with cumin, ginger, and vegetables like green papaya, raw plantain, and potatoes.
