Shorputi (সরপুঁটি), scientifically known as Systomus sarana (or Puntius sarana, Olive Barb), is a popular freshwater carp indigenous to rivers, ponds, and wetlands across Bengal and South Asia.

• Appearance & Size: A shiny, silvery fish with an olive-greenish back, golden-tinged scales, and reddish-tinted fins. It is significantly larger and meatier than common small punti (choto punti).

• Taste & Texture: The flesh is sweet, tender, and rich in natural oils, giving it a distinctive succulent flavor.

• Bones: Like most minor carps, it has fine intramuscular pin-bones (Y-bones) along with the central spine, requiring careful eating.

• Culinary Highlights:

  • Shorputi Jhal / Tel Jhal: Slow-cooked in a spicy mustard oil gravy with mustard paste (shorshe bata), nigella seeds, and green chilies.

  • Bhapa Shorputi: Steamed with mustard and poppy seed paste inside banana leaves or a tiffin box.
