Sundarbaner Crab (সুন্দরবনের কাঁকড়া), typically the Giant Mud Crab or Green Mangrove Crab (Scylla serrata), is a prized seafood delicacy wild-caught in the mangrove estuaries and tidal creeks of the Sundarbans.
  • Appearance & Build: Heavy, smooth dark olive-green to charcoal-brown shell (carapace) with massive, robust front claws (chelipeds) showing reddish-orange tips and serrated edges.
  • Meat & Roe: Known for dense, exceptionally sweet, succulent white lump meat in the body and claws. Mature female crabs are especially coveted for their rich, creamy, bright orange-yellow internal roe (fat/tamale).
  • Habitat: Brackish estuarine waters, muddy banks, and deep root tangles of the Sundarbans mangrove forests.
  • Everyday Culinary Favorites:
    • Kankra Kasha / Jhal: Cooked in mustard oil with sliced onions, ginger-garlic paste, slit green chilies, tomatoes, and freshly ground garam masala.
    • Bhapa Kankra: Crab meat gently steamed with sharp mustard paste, poppy seed paste (posto), turmeric, and a generous splash of raw mustard oil.
